Music player Database problems

UPDATE 3/29/2010:

Some people may be using the Ovi Player. Ovi Player seems to do some additional changes to how music is index in the device, as some people are having problems following this method when they use OVI player. So if you use OVI player this MAY not work for you.

Keep this in mind before trying this method.

I've not used OVI player to find out how to fix the similar issue when this software is used.

Hello again. This time I want to touch on an issue that has been common to all Nseries devices since the N91 introduced the Music Player that most Nseries device share.

I'm talking about the Music Library.

This library contains all the Artist, Album Art, etc. contained in the MetaData of the Music Files.

When you use Windows Media Player and sync (using Media Player USB mode) AKA MTP the Library is automatically updated.

When you drag and drop you need to manually update the Library.

But sometimes something goes wrong and the Update Library operation either doesn't find the songs, hangs, or otherwise fails.

When this happens the most common thing is that the Library may have become corrupted and you need to delete certain files. But which files?

Well after some testing I came to find that these are the files that need deleting in order to get rid of the corrupted library.

Storage Drives: (Mass storage E, Memory Card F)

\private\101ffca9\harvesterdbvx_x.dat

\private\10281e17\[string]mpxvx_x.db

\private\10281e17\[string]pcvx_x.db

  • TIP: Connect the device in USB mass storage mode (File Transfer), to locate the private folder from the PC.
  • TIP: STRING and x_x will change depending on your phone.
After you've done this, then you should be able to re-scan and re-create the Music Library.

As always if you have questions and comments, leave a comment.

Cheers!

Hi

I read your post with great interest,as my N96 has exactly this problem. No matter how I try and copy music files (.mp3) from PC (Win XP) to the device using the Nseries PC suite, the device is unable to detect the files as music when i press "update library".

So, i read your post, at tried to follow your instructions. Difficult !
You say I should locate 3 files and then delete them.
But I cannot even find them.
Tried via "Explore your Nokia device" -:- but cannot find a folder named "private". Cannot find any files having "harvest" as part of their name.
Also tried on the device via the file manager to manually brovse through the enture structure to find such files - no luck.

Can you please elaborate on how i should find and delete these tiles ?

Maybe I should add, that my N96 is installed in Danish. It seem that basic folders and files still have british names - but "you never know".

Best regards and Happy new year
Soren

You need to install another File Browser to your device or connect the phone using Mass Storage and use the Windows File Browser to find it.

Some browsers that you can install in your device are FXplore, YBrowser, ActiveFile, etc.

Hi, ive go the N96 and i have previously had this problem, at first it was pot luck it would sometimes find new music and sumtimes not, once i deleted all my music and had to re sync.

Now I have followed your instuctions and deleteed the files, and music player no longer has any tracks, and the scan still doesnt work.

i have nokia n81 i have deleted the files that ou said and left the phone overnight and it still says refreshing added0 and this process does not stop.i have done a factory reset too. i thought about formatting memory card but many software were on it and thought that fomating and putting the backp data back will not solve the problem becausing would only be putting the same data back that has problem . i have the latest software version v20.0.056

El_loco said...

One point to keep in mind is to not use MTP mode (like Windows Media Player does) to SYNC music.

SYNCED music using MTP goes into a different database. If you were using WMP SYNC then this solution may not solve the problem.

So you have two options.

1) Format the Memory Cards/Mass Memory. Then use Mass storage to transfer the Music and other files.

2) Look into the PRIVATE folder and see if you can find the other database. You could also completely DELETE the PRIVATE folder just remember to make a backup before you do.

Even with a 1000 songs or more the Music Searching shouldn't take more than 1 hour.

I'm sorry if this hasn't been able to solve your issue.

well what i found out may be of some kind of help but is very time consuming though . you can send all the songs through bluethooth on your pc remember onlyin way by right cliking and send option and not through ivt or some other bluetooth manager that is you sshould not open the e drive in the drive menu that pops up.so that you recieve the song in the inbox.Since you people send a lot of songs you should change the inbox memory to memory card from phone memory. for thosewho use ivt manager can download the latest version i.e bluesolil i am talking about which youdownload which is 6.44 .and you will the right click send option and your same media player works and there is nothing such as a bad mp3 file if the file is mp3 it will simply play.which i think is much better then waiting the entire night for nothing added 0 thing.and above all much better than thinking you have been cheated. i had this problem andthis saved my life. yes i know that there are lot of spaces missing in that text cause i thew the keyboard findingout my n81 is piece of.**.Anbody is welcome for comment in the meanwhile i look for a keyboard replacement .

Chetan.

I believe in this case a FORMAT of the mass memory and the PHONE MEMORY would be better than using Bluetooth.

Also you can play files through FILE MANAGER directly from the file system which is also easier IMHO.

If all fails a FULL FORMAT and starting over is probably the best thing.

Try not to load a bunch of USELESS and UNTRUSTED software. Only use SW that is SIGNED and can be trusted. SW (freeware and shareware) or beta or alfa software CAN and WILL cause problems to your device.

Make a BACKUP of the phone BEFORE you start loading and installing UNsecured stuff so that if it starts behaving erratically you can delete those things.

Anonymous said...

Playing files through File Manager is painful. Plays only one at a time. You cannot create playlists, categorise, etc. or access any other options of Music Player.

I am faced with the same problem in 5800 - library refresh (after initially working well) is stalled at 0 files, even after 2 hours, after I added two folders using explorer in PC Suite.

Any help in how to get around this will be highly appreciated.

El_loco said...

Format the memories and do a full reset. that's all I can think of.

Then start loading a few songs at a time (not more than 100). The problem may be a corrupted file. Some files may have some header corruption, these type of problems are sometimes ignored by the PC applications but will cause problems in the phone.

Also you could try using Windows Media Player and SYNC songs. Use Media mode or Music mode in USB mode selection screen in the phone. When you SYNC with WMP11 then you don't need to search for the songs the database is automatically updated.

hello

try sending your file through bluetooth on your pc and recieve it your inbox and save it and you will find that it works . remember send it in a way that you recieve your file or mp3 file in your inbox .and you will see that it is already entered to yor music player and you dont need to press the refresh .if
you dont know how to send using bluetooth you can ask me .

Ok here is another solution.I suffered the music library refresh on my N73 ME
1-mass storage mode, and open your files.
2- go to "music" folder
3- open each folder and cut/paste the music files directly to "music" folder
4- after you copied directly to music folder, switch off your phone and switch on again

now you can refresh the music library

Hi Sammar

I have had a N96 for 2 months now - and i love it.

To me, sound quality seems great, but I don't know what you compare it with. Obviously it cannot compete with my living room B&O hi-fi gear, and since the input is mp3 or other compressed files, it makes it difficult to compare it with "real" music.
- but I'm happy.

The player has not turned off my music when i did'nt want it !
- except for when i (by accident) touch the buttons on the combined external "remote"control box that comes with the headset.
- It's irritating that i haven't figured out how to disable these buttons - yet. But if you don't use the headset, or if you use another headset whitout "remote" control, you will not have this problem.

Not sure what your Q is about the video ?

New software and firmware for the phone is installed using your Nokia N-series software which comes witj the phone - it runs in a wizard and you are guided through it - quite easy when I tried it.

Regards from snowy Denmark

Hi again Sammar

As far as I have tried it, the quality of N96 camera is OK.
Auto-focus and auto sensibility works fine for me, but I am missing a zoom. I knew this before i bought the phone - and camera is not the main reason i bought it.

Video recorder, I have only tried once. I was not aware the phone had this feature - and not really sure I need it, so I can't give you proper info on it.

Playback of the videos that I have seen ("Transformers" video was included at purchase) is high quality - I think youll be impressed.

I use the radio every day for 1 or 2 hours while walking or jogging or in public transport. That works fine - no hanging.
But inside bulidings the receiver will not always be able to pick up the signal. It works OK ouside and in cars, busses, trains - also between bulidings.

The speed to enter the internet ?
You should know, that N96 can go to internet via 3 different routes:
1: via the phone network
2: via a WiFi network (private or public)
3: via bluetooth through your PC

2 and 3 is fast, but I guess you're asking about aaccess method 1, so thats what I'm describing below.

I have accessed stock option info pages and other pages specifically intended for mobile phones (reduced screen size and optimised bandwidth usage) - that works fine.
I have tried pages which are NOT optimised for mobile phones, and it can take a long time to download big pages with lots of pictures - which ar outside the visible screen.
Slow - but it works fine, and you can scroll to see the remaining parts of the screen.
Also you can "go back" to the previous screen - in many steps - works fine.

Have tried to hook a PC up to the internet using the N96 as internet connection. Excellent - but that will - of cause - depend on your mobile operator. I'm able to run on 3G (UMTS), but if that isn't available, you may have 2,5G (GSM/EDGE) - which means appx. 128k/s. Both speeds are acceptable.
If your operator only has 2G (SGM) the speed is only 19kbit/ses, which is painful - but functional if you're patient.
I have never tried MSN, but I guess it'll work fine if you are on 3G (UMTS) or 2,5G (EDGE) - well, as NSM is text based, I guess that even 2G (GSM) on 19Kbit/sec vill probably also work acceptable.

The snow has now all melted away - so it's grey and wet in Denmark.

This worked 4 me! I spent days and days trying to solve the prob and then i red your post.
I had the same problem with my N85, soft. ver. 11.047. My library didn't want to refresh and also I couldn't set the volume level when listening a song.
After deletion of those 3 files my library refreshed and everything got back to normal.
Thanks again, gr8 post!!!

for Nokia E63

Back-up
\private\101ffca9\harvesterdbvx_x.dat
on your computer.

Then open that file from your memory card using Notepad, then erase all its content, then save it.

Then reinsert your memory card to your phone then refresh

i can't find these folders and files...i'm using a nokia e50

El_loco said...

I'm not that familiar with the E50 it may handle music differently.

You won't find these files unless you are using USB mass storage mode or put the memory card in a card reader.

Bernardo Souza said...

The soluction for my E50:

1- Delete the Music Library files stored at memory card using X-plore or another file manager (the file path in my E50 is E:\Private\100012a5\DBS_101FE031_mcv4.mpd);
2- Remove the memory card;
3- Open the Music Player and refresh the Music Library;
4- Delete the Library file at the phone's memory (C:\Private\100012a5\DBS_101FE031_mcv4.mpd);
5- Put the memory card back and transfer the music files using the MASS STORAGE mode or a card reader;
6- Go to the Galery, select TRACKS and the files shall be found;
7- Open the Music Player and refresh the Library;

To find the private folder in mass storage you need to enable looking at hidden folders and hidden files in Windows Explorer or whatever you are using to browse the files.

Also turn on looking at System files.

Hi Loco,
im using an nokia n85.
i followed the steps as stated, but even after refreshing after the deletion of the 3 files, the problem remains. when i connect the phone in mass storage mode again, it shows that the 3 files have been recreated again. Do you know of any way that i could solve this problem?

El_loco said...

I assume you mean the problem that some files are not found.

Did you also delete the files in the Memory card? there should be similar files in each memory.

If all else fails the only other method would be to reset the device. But that will delete all your data, and even some data that it had when it was new. It will put the phone in a blank state.

Doesn't work for my N95-8GB. I delete the 3 files from memory card, but the MPXHarvesterServer error is still there when I refresh.

Does anyone else get the same error with N95?

El_loco said...

Not sure I understand.

The N95 8GB doesn't support memory cards.

The files would be in Mass Memory.

If you ever loaded files in the Phone memory then the phone memory is corrupted and can't be fixed unless you do a hard reset that will clean your phone (remove everything from it).

hi,why is it that i can't find those 3 files in the privtae folder in my n73?thanks!

El_loco said...

The N73 is a rather old phone.

The N73 Music Edition, may have a similar folder structure but I don't know.

These problems I'm talking about are for devices N95 and newer. So from 2007 to the present.

The N73 was of the old design before the revolutionary N91 which introduced the new music player that's now included to most high end Nseries.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the great tip. It works for me but it seams that my E75 looses some music files from the memory card! I cannot specify if this happens after deleting the files files from /private/ though.

Anyway the problem is that i fill up my mem card with songs and after some time i see in the music library a symbol which is implying that a song is corrupted. When i check the mem card in mass memory mode with windows explorer it appears that the file is actually missing! Explorer still shows that the mem card is full but JDiskReport shows that only 1.6Gb is used from a 4Gb card (which corresponds roughly to the amount of songs now visible on the card). Anyone experienced the same promblem?

Br,
Tuomas

STRING and x_x will change depending on your phone. (this is in the post you need to re-read it)

Fix the metadata of the files in the PC before adding it to the phone that way the artist and all other data will be correct.

I can find al my music in the library on my phone but i can't hear anything. If i play a video then i can hear the sound but if I play music it doesn't. Can you please say wat's wrong?

El_loco said...

Since I don't have your phone model or what type of files your music is or anything it's difficult to help.

But here are some general things to check:

- Check the volume (I know but you never know)
- Do you have a headset or bluetooth device connected?, the sound may be coming out of this
- If the sound doesn't come from the speakers try the headset or viceversa
- Try a different format music (if Mp3 doesn't work try a WMA, M4A, AAC, does that work?
- Try opening the file from File Manager does it play there?
- Try assigning it as a ringtone, does it play?

I'm having the same problem with my Nokia N97. It tells me I have x hours of sound files yet the library is empty. The problem I have is that I have used the file programmes you suggested yet appear not to have a private folder. At least if I have, neither ActiveFile or YBrowser can seem to find them.

El_loco said...

The Private Folder is visible in Mass storage and in the memory card if you use Mass storage or from YBrowser (it should be).

In the phone memory then it's not visible.

Worked a treat on my N85 - God I hate this phone!!

Micke_Nygard said...

Hi,

I used the instruction you gave and they worked.... but only once.

The N97mini started searching for music and podcasts BUT I made the mistake of connecting the power cable (to the USB) and that resulted in termination of the search.

After that the library was corrupted (again) and I could not restart the procedure no matter how many times I retried deleting the files.

I did however succeed to make a bypass of the problem. This is what I have and did:

1. On my N97mini I have 3 drives; C (phone), E (mass) and F (card).

2. My intention is to keep all music files on the card (F-drive). The E-drive only contains one piece of music on it - and that's the way I want it.

3. I found a folder (Music) on both E and F -drives.

4. I renamed the folder on E to "Music-X" and kept the folder on F as "Music".

5. I started the music player and refreshed the library. It took about 1½ hours for my 1700 recordings

Now it works just fine.

I'm using WMP as the syncing tool for music. With it I can direct the output to the F-drive and keep my E-drive free of music.

If I use the Nokia's player on the PC then the the drag'n'drop feature inserts all music on the E -drive.

I don't know how I could make it use the F-drive instead.

Can anyone point me to the right direction?

Micke

Hi

I have this problem with my N97, I already tried deleting those files. After that I checked the library and it detected 2 songs, 2 sounds recorded with the phone, but when I try to update for all the music it just have the same problem.

El_loco said...

Remember that you need to delete thse files from each Drive, not just the mass memory but any cards where you have music as well.

If this fails, then the only way would be to completely re-format the phone and mass memory.

I know royal pain, but I haven't seen of any fail-proof way to recover an N97 once it starts acting up.

responding to similar post above. First time I tried El-loco's listed fix, it worked a treat...

My problem is, about three weeks later, my phone broke - the unlock slider just literally fell off! I had to send it for repair so backed it all up and off it went; came back much quicker, new camera unit, various minor probs fixed... Fandabbydozey! Or so I thought...

Then the music library went blank again. 2544 tracks, 8 days+ of music displayed in the title bar but no tracks available to view or play. All tracks still on phone mass memory, playable one-by-one through the File Manager but not through "Music Player". I've tried this fix again since about 10 times and so far can't get back more than 110 tracks. Will update if I find a fix. I just get music library corrupted, refreshing, searching for music and podcasts, all sorts of searches but no files located - and I've left my phone for hours to see if it just needed time. Nada. I am starting to hate my N97...

Hello,

My X6 had the problem that i added 2000+ songs, and it only recognized 478 of them. I tried your method, and well, it can't even see a single song in the library now, says that i have nothing put on it.

I tried to access the "private" Folder again, but it seems that it has deleted itself. I tried almost everything now, syncing with Windows Media Player, syncing with Nokia OVI Player and Nokia PC Ovi Suite, did many hardresets, but it helped nothing. By the way, at the Ovi Player, it still shows that i have put 2000+ songs on the phone, but the library doesn't recognize them...

It seems like Nokia is dumb as hell posting a new Software with so many Bugs on it, what a shame...

Anyways, what should i do now? Bring my phone to a Nokia Care Point? I got the phone just 1 Day ago, oh god...

Denys said...

By the way, i should mention that i can access and open every file from the File Manager.

El_loco said...

Hi Denys,

I don't know what could be the problem.

The X6 may be different.

This post was meant to be for Nseries phones, not Xseries. I know that Eseries seemed to also use the same files for storing music.

The only thing I can think of would be the format everything (mass memory, memory cards, phone memory) and try again, or as you said take it to a care point.

Hey man, can you please help me out with this, it's driving me crazy. I would like to delete these 3 files, but I just can't connected my phone is mass storage mode. It says F/ access denied, might be corrupted or unreadable. I have nokia n97 mini, 8gb integrated card. I'd like not to have to format it, kaz I got loads of stuff on it. Thanks a lot bro.

Sorry, didn't see you post earlier. What OS are you using on your computer?, do you have a card reader you can use so you don't use the phone?, card readers are really cheap now a days and can serve you better if you're having problems connecting the phone to access the card.
